Should we hobble a lame duck president?

Do you remember how, in the days after losing the 2020 election, Trump played musical chairs with leadership in DOJ and the military? It was one of the more disconcerting things to watch happen. We could tell he was up to no good, but it was hard to understand the point of it. In retrospect, most of it was part of the coup attempt.

Then there was installing his cronies into sinecures. What’s not to love about giving your puppets a no-work source of income that lets them spy on the new administration?

And FOURTEEN lame duck judicial confirmations!

And don’t forget all the other crap he waited until after the election to push through. I guess he had to pay off his donors somehow.

And then there’s the pardons.

I understand that Congress is limited in how it can restrict Presidential powers — that’s Constitution 101, thanks. But some of those powers are granted by Congress, or need confirmation. I also understand that a hobbled President could also be a problem if we have to respond to a crisis. But, keeping that in mind, shouldn’t we try to limit the damage a spiteful loser can do on their way out the door? Like everything else these days, we can’t trust in norms to keep a lame duck President from burning everything down on his way out the door.

The final insult: Trump fired members of the White House staff on Inauguration Day so there wouldn’t be anyone to let Joe Biden in the door.
